In May 2025, the European Commission launched the Water Resilience Strategy to restore the water cycle, ensure water security for people and nature, and make the European water sector future-proof and competitive.

Rainwater on our roads is usually discharged immediately (sometimes with delay) into surface or groundwater. With the project Rural Roadwater Rescue, the VMM and its partners are exploring how roads can be transformed into climate-adaptive water hubs.
In 2024, the Vrouwvliet river in Mechelen and Sint-Katelijne-Waver underwent an ecological transformation. Over a stretch of approximately 3 km, from Maanstraat to Tivolipark, the VMM removed concrete bank reinforcements wherever possible. The result: a more natural watercourse with improved purification capacity and greater potential for aquatic life in the future.

The VMM has introduced a new screening tool to support local authorities. This tool helps cities and municipalities identify bottlenecks and policy priorities, enabling them to take more targeted measures to improve air quality.
