Our organisation

The VMM coordinates the integrated water policy in Flanders. We play a role in the various stages of the policy process (measuring, planning, taking action and evaluating). This adds value by providing an overview and establishing connections.

• For rivers and streams, we want to achieve a good ecological status and keep flooding and water shortages under control.
• Groundwater reserves will become crucial in the coming years and we are monitoring them closely.
• We are taking the lead in working with all stakeholders to limit the impact of drought and develop climate-adaptive solutions.
• We are taking on a coordinating role for the entire drinking water and wastewater chain. We are achieving the joint objectives together with the various players.

As the manager of category 1 watercourses, we want to work with other managers of non-navigable watercourses to create more green-blue infrastructure, with a focus on ecological aspects such as fish migration, combating invasive species, and pesticide-free management.

The VMM is the competent authority in Flanders for air policy and a partner in improving air quality and tackling air pollution. We are actively involved in the various stages of the policy process, enabling us to maintain a comprehensive overview and establish connections.

We are responsible for measuring and reporting the air quality across Flanders, and we verify whether pollutant levels comply with European, Flemish and World Health Organisation (WHO) standards.

Additionally, we monitor the concentration of a number of substances that are not yet regulated by legislation. In such cases, we assess progress based on observed trends to determine whether the air quality is improving.

The VMM aims to influence policy development and implementation in the areas of climate adaptation, circular water, and drought. This will enable us to adapt our environment to climate change.

The VMM empowers local authorities to respond effectively to climate challenges. We provide tailored insight into local climate challenges and help translate Flemish climate adaptation policy and principles into actionable local strategies. Using our climate adaptation tools, we support municipalities in shaping plans, policies and concrete projects that foster climate-resilient communities.
