Our philosophy

The VMM believes in working across borders to tackle environmental challenges together. International cooperation is essential to develop sustainable solutions for water, air and environmental quality.

International engagement

As an internally autonomous agency with legal personality, the VMM operates independently and has the autonomy to initiate projects.

The VMM actively cooperates at a regional and international level, both inside and outside of Europe. We contribute to international policymaking and put our expertise at the service of international policy for the future.

The VMM is responsible for the implementation of certain environmental obligations imposed on Belgium and Flanders by Europe. For example, we cooperate in the transposition of the Water and Air quality framework directives into Flemish legislation. By doing so, we are able to act as a driving force in the development of European directives concerning water and air quality.
